Sandblasting involves using highly pressurised air and sand to blast away discolouration and staining which builds up on all stonework over time due to exterior weather extremes and local and atmospheric conditions. Sandblasting is a very effective and popular technique because it can be used on a variety of stone types. It is especially used in the inscription process for headstones and monuments.
 
For darker coloured headstones the laser etching technique can also be used because a darker stone colour provides the greatest contrast when inscriptions are added. Since laser etching takes place on dark polished granite, the lighter, unpolished granite underneath provides a stark contrast to the polished surface.
